Answers to Comprehension OE (7)

OXYMORONS - What's that?

An oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines normally contradictory terms

For example,

'deafening silence'
'bittersweet'
'original copy'

You might wonder - how can silence be deafening?
However, we might chance upon this term and it is used to create a vivid idea - it is so quiet that it is as disturbing as a loud noise.

Can you think of any other examples?

Been busy driving a bride and her groom around the last 2 days. It has been so hectic that I couldn't find time to post your homework. My sincere apologies :(

Anyway, seeing that today is the last day of your holidays, we'll ignore the homework that I had planned for you the past 2 days.

Exercise 50 - 57 and the topic is on subject-verb agreement.

Please look through the exercises that you have done the last few days and think about the mistakes that you've made. If you're unsure of why you got it wrong, but put a little asterisk (*) next to the question and fold the page - you have have consultation time to ask me when school reopens and we'll sort out what went wrong.

So what's that? Put simply, a preposition tells us where, when or how.

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence. For example, in the sentence, "My dog is on the bed," the word "on" is the preposition; it shows the relationship between the dog and the bed. One way to think of prepositions is to remember that they indicate location. If we change the preposition, we change where the dog is, in relation to the bed. Consider these examples:

The dog is under the bed.

The dog is in the bed.

A preposition can also be used to show when something happens. In the sentence, "She always drinks coffee," "always" is the preposition. It tells us when she drinks coffee. Just like in the samples above, changing the preposition will change the sentence.

She seldom drinks coffee.

She never drinks coffee.

It is a VERB that comes from a combination of a verb and a preposition to form new a VERB whose meaning is different from the meaning of the two words individually.

Comprehension Cloze (15 x 1m)

There is insufficient evidence to tell us how smallpox started. It probably first became a common disease in the land of the pharaohs. From there, it eventually spread around the worldcausing the death of millions of people. There was no information or knowledge on how to curb this fatal disease. If anyone had been infected then, no doctor would have been able to save the patient as he would be condemned to death.

It is a different situation now/today/currently/nowadays as childeren are vaccinated at a young age so that they will not/never be infected with this deadly disease.

Small pox is caused by a virus. Most of the victims are infected when they come intocontact with a person who has been infected with smallpox. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, he is likely to infect others. This is because the tiny virus particles are released into the air and anyone who inhales** them becomes infected.

About three weeks after the infection, the victim breaks out into a rash. It usually starts on the face, before spreading to the chest and legs. The majority of deaths occur during this time, but some victims die even before the rash develops/starts/appears/spreads.

A victim who survives the disease is likely to be scarred for life. However, he will be immune to another attach. In the modern world, smallpox has been eliminated and will never be the killer disease it once was.
